Included are a selection of beaded betel boxes, lime cannisters, wood carvings, silver jewelry, turtle combs, bronze and bone figures, spears, knives, masks and other items collected in the field from the Atoni and Belu peoples of West Timor. T109 A selection of old beaded betel boxes, lime cannisters and related items. Collected in the field in Western Timor from Kupang to the East Timor border. The significance of betel nut, and the related paraphanalia, is well described in this catalogue entry from the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney: "[Betel nut] baskets and containers illustrate the wide-ranging skills and materials used to satisfy many specific needs of traditional life in the Lesser Sunda Islands of Indonesia. Utilising wood, differing palm products, bamboo, and imported glass beads, a variety of containers are made which as well as being beautiful and functional, offer many cultural insights. These decorative boxes for holding betel-nut are painstakingly covered with coloured beads in traditional geometric patterns and reflect the ritual importance in Southeast Asian societies of chewing betel-nut. In some areas the refusal to share in this ritual was a declaration of war. Baskets are often elaborately patterned, either by using differently coloured fibre strands or through the addition of beads and shells. Plant materials were harvested from the immediate environment and traditionally coloured in golds and browns with vegetable dyes; more recently, brightly coloured baskets have been produced using commercial dyes. Basket making, which is done by both men and women in Southeast Asia, is one of the oldest of crafts and basketry forms have changed little over time. Baskets tend to have short lives, thanks to wear and tear and the perishable nature of the materials. History notes: [betel] boxes are used to contain betel nut. Betel nut is chewed as a mild intoxicant and is combined with sirih leaves and lime (from rock or crushed sea-shells depending on locality). There is a great deal of ritual and symbolism associated with betel nut chewing. For example, upon entering an Atoni home visitors were expected to bring a gift of betel nut and sirih leaves. These would have been placed in a box (such as these examples) and passed around, along with a container of powdered lime. The practice of betel chewing also involves a male/female duality as is common in Southeast Asian belief, and widely manifested in Timorese art. The nut is female, whilst the sirih leaves are male, and the lime, which turns the mixture red, represents sperm. Chewing betel nut is felt to facilitate communication, which may be the reason why the refusal of neighbouring clans to participate in sharing betel - a breakdown in communication - was tantamount to a declaration of war. T110 A selection of old spears. West Timor. Belu people. Collected in the field in West Timor. Constructed of wood and old bamboo shafts, goat hide or fur, and old steel. These spears range in age from about 30 to 80 years and are authentic weapons, not pieces made for the tourist trade. In any event, in our experience, unlike Bali or Java, there are few organized markets to buy tribal art on the southern islands of Nusa Tenggara (Timor, Alor, Sumba, Flores, etc.). These pieces, which are characteristic of the form of spear found in West Timor, were collected in the mountains near the East Timor border. Condition: typical wear and patina from authentic use, with the older examples having taken on excellent honey coloured patina and/or blackness from being kept in traditional houses. T111 Wooden mask. West Timor. Belu people. A very good old carved mask collected near the East Timor border, with characteristic geometric designs found on objects in Timor. Such masks often depict either human or part human forms, as with this mask and are sometimes found in the traditional houses in West Timor (traditional houses themselves often in the past had carved figural house posts, human ancestor figures around the house or architectural features displaying human or animal forms (such as portions of the rafters inside the traditional bee-hive or platform houses found in West and East Timor)). While authentic masks in the field are growing increasingly scarce (we sometimes find them hanging in traditional houses or inside the roof of traditional houses), and a small industry has grown up on Timor of copying masks, old masks such as this one can still be found. T112 A traditional woven man's bag from West Timor ("aluk"). This is a stunning and now very scarce example of traditional betel bags worn by men in Timor. Such bags can be found in woven (Ikat) and beaded designs, many of which will have antique Dutch silver colonial coins sewn on to the strap or bag itself. Sometimes (now rarely) these bags can be located with bone, coin, ivory, horn and other pendants. This bag is superbly complete and elaborate with pendants made from bone, boar's horns, teeth, wood and bone beads with Dutch colonial coins. Men in Timor used (and to some extent still use) these traditional bags to carry betel nut and related betel nut chewing paraphanalia (lime cannisters, betel nut boxes and other items). Collected in the field from an old family collection near the East Timor border. Condition: superb authentic wear and patina on the wood, bone and coin elements. T113 A coin silver headpiece for traditional dancing. West Timor. Constructed of engraved coin silver, cord, beads and dyed horse hair. Collected in the field in west timor. Typically used by traditional dancers in West Timor as part of their dress, together with bronze or steel leg bells (ankle bracelets with bells) and traditional silver bracelets. While now very scarce, these can be occasionally found in a variety of designs and grades of silver ranging from about 50% (of which this is example) to smaller head pieces made of high grade silver. This piece is a highly detailed and ornate example, with human heads, a small silver pectoral disc incorporated, old seed beads, dyed horsehair and elaborate geometric designs with a strong folk quality. Likely about 40-60 years old. Condition: generally excellent, with several small pendants missing from use. Dimensions: about 12" in height.
