Col67 A very nice and early Woodrow Wilson presidential letter. Signed in pen by Woodrow Wilson while he was at Princeton. This letter is a letter of recommendation for William Baird, of the Baird family that owned Baldwin Locomotive in Philadelphia, for a government position in Paris. Please note that we will be replacing the photos of this letter shortly with clearer photographs. Also, please note that any apparent yellowing to the letter is only apparent as the letter is in rather nice condition and is brighter and whiter than our current photographs show. About Woodrow Wilson at Princeton (From Alexander Leitch, A Princeton Companion, copyright Princeton University Press (1978)): "Wilson's fondest dream came true with his election to a professorship at Princeton in 1890. When his efforts to prod President Francis L Patton to raise the money for a law school failed, Wilson set about preparing what was undoubtedly the best pre-law curriculum in the country. Year in and year out he was voted the most popular teacher on the faculty; he was also a friend and counselor to numberless students who worshipped him for his warmth and highmindedness. At the same time, his fame as a scholar grew. A regular lecturer at the Johns Hopkins and the New York Law School, he also spoke widely, contributed to popular magazines and wrote best-selling biography and history. However, his greatest triumph during this period was his eloquent and influential oration, "Princeton in the Nation's Service" at the Sesquicentennial celebration in 1896. When President Patton was persuaded to retire in June 1902, the trustees with one accord elected Wilson to fill the chair of Witherspoon and McCosh. In his first report to the Board of Trustees, the new president presented a program, to cost $12.5 million, to transform Princeton into a major university. Substantial sums were not forthcoming, so Wilson moved slowly. He tightened academic standards so severely that enrollment declined sharply until 1907. Princeton had no administrative structure to speak of in 1902. One of Wilson's first actions was the creation of departments of instruction with heads directly responsible to the president. He later arranged the creation of new deanships of the departments of science and of the college. At the same time, he took the effectual power of faculty nominations out of the control of the Trustees' Curriculum Committee and lodged it in the president and departments. These innovations were a prelude to more far-reaching changes. In 1904, Wilson led the faculty in instituting the most significant curricular reform in American higher education in the twentieth century. In place of the aimless, free elective system, which had heretofore prevailed at Princeton as at other institutions, Wilson substituted a unified curriculum of general studies during the first two years, capped by concentrated study in one discipline (the first program for a major) and related fields during the junior and senior years. There was the added provision of an honors program for ambitious students." About This Collection: This letter is part of an American collection consisting of documents, receipts, photographs, cabinet cards, daguerreotypes, tin types and other related material relating to the Baird family of Philadelphia (who owned Baldwin Locomotive in the late 19th century) and several other related families including the Harding family. About Matthew Baird: Matthew Baird (1817 - 1877) was an early partner of the Baldwin Locomotive Works. He was born in Derry, Ireland in 1817 and his parents brought him to Philadelphia in 1821. Baird went to work for the new railroad industry in the 1830s and started an apprenticeship at the New Castle Manufacturing Company in Delaware between 1834 and 1836. He then went on to become superintendent of the Newcastle and Frenchtown Railway shops, where he left to become a foreman of the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1838. In 1854 Baird invested in a share of the Baldwin Locomotive Works becoming a partner. At this time, he developed a new fire arch to improve steam locomotive combustion. The improved fire arch was subsequently patented by George Griggs in 1857. Upon Baldwin's death in 1866, Baird became the sole proprietor of the company, a position he held until he retired in 1873. The town of Baird Texas is named after Matthew Baird.

The collection includes letters, photographs and correspondence to, from or relating to: Louise Clark Whitney, Ruth Harding Davis, Isabella Barnes, J W J Colbrook, Uriah Coldwell, May Cooman Bowen, William J Baird, Edgar Harding, Sarah Harding, Marshall Harding, Charles Harding, Devereux Barker, Francis Harding, Mrs. Boyer Davis Jr., Julia Harding, Sara Robinson, J S Robinson, J W Colbrook, Edgar Baird, Gardner Colly, John Butterfield and Mary Underwood among others. Col72 A fine 14k gold Sons of the Revolution American medal. The medal is both rare and has an excellent association having belonged to the famous American art critic Charles Edmund Dana (see below). Engraved "Charles Edmund Dana" and "February 17 1890" and engraved "347" on the back of the eagle. An outstanding 14K gold oval figural medallion with blue and yellow silk ribbon. The medallion has a high relief Revolutionary War soldier on front with date below of 1775, gold spread winged eagle surmount and surround with 13 five pointed stars on deep blue enameled field. Verso has high relief bust portrait of Washington with "Sons of the Revolution” above and date of 1883 below. Made by famous jewelers of Bailey Banks & Biddle of Philadelphia (though this particular medal is not marked). This medal is from the Baird family of Philadelphia that owned Baldwin Locomotive in the 19th century. About the Sons of the Revolution: The general Society of the Sons of the Revolution, a New York Society that was organized in 1883, was founded by John Austin Stevens who envisioned an aristocratic social and hereditary organization along the lines of the Society of the Cincinatti. About Charles Edmund Dana: Charles Edmund Dana (1843 - 1914) was an American art critic and president of the Numismatic and Antique Society of Philadelphia. He graduated from Union College in 1865, studied art in Paris under Luminais and architecture in Dresden. He was a professor of art at the University of Pennsylvanie from 1893 to 1904, a member of the American Philosophical and Archaeological Societies, Shakespeare Society of Philadelphia and President of the Numis and Antique Society of Philadelphia. He was also a member of the Loyal Legion, Order of Foreign Wars, Founders and Patriots of America, the President of the Philadelphia Watercolour Club and a Trustee of the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art. He was also the subject of a famous portrait by Thomas Eakins. We expect that, as this medal is from descendants of the Baird family, Charles Dana must have known the Bairds, as Matthew Baird had a significant collection of American paintings, including a sizeable collection of Philadelphia painters. The town of Baird Texas is named after Matthew Baird.
